Grindstone Island, a summer seminar and retreat venue
www.grindstoneisland.ca

Grindstone Island – a private 11 acre island in Big Rideau Lake, Ontario, Canada – is a venue for small-group seminars and meetings on issues in cultural informatics.

Archives & Museum Informatics will not be offering a formal program on Grindstone Island in this summer. If you are interested in Grindstone Island as a venue for your group meeting, please review our Group Policy (PDF) and If you have ideas for programs in the future, please

This beautiful island was the summer home of the first Admiral of the Canadian Navy. Built in the early 20th century around a 19th century core, the main lodge is a shingle style treasure. As well as a family retreat, Grindstone Island has served as a Quaker non-violence training centre (in the 1960s and 70s) and as a co-operative conference centre.

Grindstone Island has been reconfigured as a 21st century retreat and meeting centre. Facilities include seminar facilities for up to approximately 20 participants, and comfortable on-site accommodations. The island has a wireless network with a connection to the Internet. This setting is perfect for in-depth learning. Explore virtually in the Photo Album or download the site plan (PDF).

A variety of sessions were offered on Grindstone Island in the summer of 2002, exploring the latest issues in culture and technology. See full course descriptions on-line or download the Brochure (PDF).
