Andy Mink is Director of Outreach and K-12 Education for the Virginia Center for Digital History at the University of Virginia. He leads professional development workshops with public school teachers around the country to design, implement, and evaluate learning expeditions that use digitized primary resources in the classroom to meet various state-mandated American History curriculum standards. He received his B.A. in History from the University of Virginia and his M.A.T. from the University of South Carolina. Prior to his current appointment, Andy taught history and literature for ten years at Prospect Heights Middle School, a rural public middle school in central Virginia. In 1996, he founded and served as director of The Discovery Program, a “school within a school” experiential education and integrated curriculum program for a heterogeneous population. Hands-on methodology, service-learning, work apprenticeships, and over fifty annual outings and workshops defined this experiential and integrated curriculum that stresses academic and character education equally. Additionally, Andy has worked extensively with the North Carolina, Colorado, Costa Rica, and Everglades Outward Bound Schools and as a school design consultant for the Expeditionary Learning Institute in Asheville, North Carolina, and Expeditionary Learning Outward Bound (ELOB) in Annapolis, Maryland. His work has appeared in the Journal of Experiential Education and the Journal of Outward Bound Education. The National Society of Experiential Education (NSEE) recently honored him as the 2003 National K-12 Educator of the Year.
