David Austin is Architecture and Art Librarian and an Associate Professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago where he administered the testbed site for AMICO. During his thirty plus years as a librarian he has been interested in and actively involved in the delivery of non-verbal information to library patrons with special interests and needs. In connection with this focus he has presented papers in various cities in the United States, Barcelona, Spain, Ljubljana, Slovenia, and Essen, Germany, and Amsterdam, The Netherlands. He has published in such journals as Computers and the History of Art, and the VRA Bulletin. For the last seven years he has directed his research interests to the creation of an index for the extensive photographic archives of the Courtauld Institute of Arts's Conway Library (published by Emmett Publishing, Ltd.) and a comprehensive database guide to the Deutsches archaeologisches Institut's Index der antiken Kunst und Architektur. He is the Art Libraries Society of North America's representative to NISO and moderates a listserve for the Getty Information Institute's Art and Architecture Thesaurus, the Union List of Artist Names, and the Thesaurus of Geographic Names.
