Archiving 101: Best Practices, Tools, and Resources for Museums to Archive the Web and Preserve Existing Collections

Kristine Hanna, The Internet Archive, USA
http://www.archiveit.org

Archive-It 2.0 is a service created by nonprofit Internet Archive to aid memory institutions with limited resources to archive, manage and access online materials. Director of Web Archiving Services Kristine Hanna will illustrate the growing importance of web archiving, the challenges "traditional" museums and libraries face in the digital age, and give quick web-based demonstrations of how museum profesionals can use Archive-It. Key themes Kristine will address include:

Public Content Creation: All collections formed and managed through Archive-It are publicly accessible, as part of Internet Archive's mission to make all knowledge open and available.

New Tools and Methods: Whereas digital preservation is generally an incredibly costly endeavor for memory institutions, Archive-It 2.0 provides built-in infrastructure and handles the storage and preservation for subscribers.

Managing Content and Metadata: It's not enough to simply collect web materials; institutions, especially those without a digital collections curator, need straightforward tools to customize harvesting and selection to create focused collections that are easily accessed and managed.
