VAN EyCK, the Visual Arts Network for the Exchange of Cultural Knowledge, is a highly accessible, continuously expanding on-line art object database, bringing together the collections of diverse contributing institutes. At present, VAN EyCK encompasses some 70,000 art objects. The initial focus is on Western art, but the scope will widen as new content is added. VAN EyCK is comprised of still images and (validated)catalog records, and is geared towards the needs of professional users. In addition to a large number of descriptors, the database provides background information the authors and owners of the objects.
