Mr. Leonard Steinbach joined The Cleveland Museum of Art as its first Chief Technology Officer in fall, 1999. Prior to this position he was Chief Technology Officer for the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (1996-99) where he was responsible for exhibition as well as general business technology. There, he also established a virtual private network connecting the New York museum to the then new Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain. Before that, while Vice-President for Information Technology for the National League for Nursing (1993-95), he was cited by InfoWorld as having developed one of the "Top 100" innovative client-server applications in 1994. A year later he developed full-motion video multi-media kiosks which were considered cutting edge at that time and were a feature of that year's New York PC Expo's multimedia pavilion. For seven prior to that he was Associate Director of Computing at a major health sciences center in New York. In addition to having been a technology manager since 1980, Mr. Steinbach also served as President of the National Microcomputer Managers Association (1993-95) and is currently President-elect of the Museum Computing Network, the international professional organization for persons involved with museum and technology. He was also recently featured in an article in C.I.O magazine about his work there, entitled "Objets d'I.T." Mr. Steinbach's formal education includes a degree in elementary education and graduate studies in journalism, business administration and information technology. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of DanceCleveland, a dance presentation organization. Mr. Steinbach has been known to chair and participate in panels at various technology and museum conferences around the country. All this aside, Len believes that managing advanced technology need not be a core competency of a museum. Finding innovative uses of new technology in order to share the joy and meaning of art is.
