Session: Demo Session 2

"Stitch in time, a guide to sewing machine company catalogs and ephemera in Smithsonian Institution collections" is a joint project of the Smithsonian Institution Libraries, the National Museum of American History (NMAH) and the NMAH Archives Center to create a digital collection of over 3,000 pieces of trade literature in support of the NMAH Textiles Division's collection of sewing machines.

This unique collection of manuals, parts lists, trade cards and other ephemera offer insights both into the museum's collections as well as offering scholars primary materials for the investigation of labor and women's history, manufacturing and marketing studies, as well as other explorations of history through material culture.

This demonstration for "Museums and the Web" will present the results of the first phase of this project which includes data collection about the individual trade literature pieces as well as a large number of images from the collection. Among the discussion points we hope to raise are issues relating to the presentation of object documentation, museum and library/archive partnerships, and the enrichment of online exhibitions through the addition of additional primary materials.
