Maria Guercio is, since January 1997, Head, International Relations, Cabinet of the Minister for Cultural Properties. Before than she was head of the research division of the Central Office for Archival Property of the Ministry for Cultural Properties. Dr. Guercio began her career in 1978 as archivist in the Archival Superintendence for Lazio, a position that she left in 1987 to work for the Ministry, within which she has held positions of increasing responsibility. During the past ten years, she has been adjunct professor at the archival schools of the University of Rome and Macerata, and has designed several programs of archival education for
different audiences. Dr. Guercio is Advisor to the Commission of Program Management of the International Council on Archives (ICA) until the year 2000, a position to which she was appointed following her chairmanship of the ICA Committee on Current Records, Records Management Systems and Appraisal. Nationally, she has contributed to the design and development of record keeping and record preservation systems for the Italian Parliament, numerous banks, universities, and other organizations. In the past few years, she has concentrated her efforts on the development of legislation related to the creation, control and preservation of electronic records, and on the testing and development of research findings in the field. She has actively, if not formally, participated in the UBC research project, and in the dissemination of its findings through workshops and seminars.
